Types of bets in horse racing

A Nap is a single is a bet on 1 selection in 1 event. It’s the best bet of the day offered by tipsters that have scoured research for the days races.

Doubles, Trebles, Accumulators

A Double is a bet made up of 2 selections and you guessed it, a Treble is a bet made up of 3 selections. Exceeding 3 selections we look to the term “accumulator” to describe how many selections are in the bet. For example 4 fold accumulator, 5 fold, 6 fold and so on, all followed by the word accumulator to show the bet it multiple selections.

Each way bet or To place bet

This is when you bet on a horse to win or be placed. The number of places can vary depending on the type of race and the number of runners. Everyday on theracing.co.uk we post bookmakers extra places to ensure you get the best value for your bets. Here’s an example of places to explain how they are paid out:

William Hill have 4 PLACES @ 1/5 the oddsinstead of 3 PLACES @ 1/4 the odds at the following races…

1:35 Ffos Las

1:35 Southwell

4:10 Limerick

Twelve (12) or more must run for 4 places 1/5th to be paid. In the event of eleven (11) runners or less, standard EW terms will apply.”

From this information you can see what you will get back from your stake should your horse win or place but also the requirements that must be met for the offer to stand.

Lucky 15

A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 bets, hence the name. The bets involve 4 selections in different events, so for example, a horse from 4 different races. The bet includes 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 four-fold. Lucky 15’s involve placing a higher stake than other bets but if you’re confident the majority of your selections will win, then it will increase your chances of a good return on your stake. There are loads more bets that work on the same idea like this one such as, Lucky 31, Heinz (57 bets), Lucky 63.

As you increase you expertise in horse racing, there are lots of other bets at you finger tips but to start off with, the bets we’ve listed are the bets you will likely see yourself using more often than not.

Seven No Trumps

Racing Post – Weak in the market but produced a promising display in third on racecourse debut in a maiden hurdle at Ludlow (2m5f, heavy); should have learned plenty from that and in-form stable’s runners have to be respected.

Doc Kauto

Racing Post – Promising over fences last season but well held on only subsequent outing at Newton Abbot in July; market check advised after his absence.

Sword Of Fate

Racing Post – Has appreciated the recent return to hurdling, leading home several returning rivals when about 3l second over C&D at 50-1 last month (soft) and consolidating that form effort at Carlisle ten days later; shortlisted off same mark with Brian Hughes once more up, and drier ground is fine.

Akarita Lights

Racing Post – Last three starts 2m7f-3m1f on soft or heavy; runner-up at Market Rasen latest; does not look on a great mark but still considered.
